Day 59_Book of Hours_ FULL

Full lyrics to Off the Wall performed by Michael Jackson and written by Rodney Lynn Temperton:

When the world is on your shoulder
Gotta straighten up your act and boogie down
If you can’t hang with the feelin’
Then there ain’t no room for you this part of town
‘Cause we’re the party people night and day
Livin’ crazy that’s the only way
[Chorus]
So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf
And just enjoy yourself
Groove, let the madness in the music get to you
Life ain’t so bad at all
If you live it off the wall
Life ain’t so bad at all (live life off the wall)
Live your life off the wall (live it off the wall)
You can shout out all you want to
‘Cause there ain’t no sin in folks all getting loud
If you take the chance and do it
There there ain’t no one who’s gonna put you down
‘Cause we’re the party people night and day
Livin’ crazy that’s the only way
[Chorus]
Do what you want to do
There ain’t no rules it’s up to you (ain’t no rules it’s all up to you)
It’s time to come alive
And party on right through the night (all right)
Gotta hide your inhibitions
Gotta let that fool loose deep inside your soul
Want to see an exhibition
Better do it now before you get too old
‘Cause we’re the party people night and day
Livin’ crazy that’s the only way
[Chorus]
So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf
And just enjoy yourself

Come on and groove (yeah) and let the madness in the music get to you
Life ain’t so bad at all
If you live it off the wall
So tonight gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf
And just enjoy yourself
Come on and groove (yeah) and let the madness in the music get to you
Life ain’t so bad at all
If you live it off the wall

We were dancing to this song this morning.  It’s on our “Feelin’ So Good” playlist.  This is how our family starts the day.  We move and groove – dancing in the kitchen as we make breakfast, dancing in the living room to wake up, dancing at the dining table cleaning up, dancing in the driveway as we water the plants.

According to most dictionaries online, “Off-the-wall” means:
– conspicuously or grossly unconventional or unusual
– exhibiting bizarre behavior; crazy

Unconventional and crazy.

This pretty much sums up our life.  But I am in love with our crazy and unconventional life, leaving nine to five permanently up on the shelf.  We have no idea where our next adventure will take us or what our family life will look like in the near future.  We are constantly in creation and destruction mode according to our own agenda – making it work and eliminating what doesn’t –  independent of the conventional and the outside world.  Going down this road, there is only infinite curiosity.  Life is an unfolding mystery and the joy of the ride itself is inevitably felt.  This is creativity in its highest form – creating your life as it happens.

“When man ceases to create, he ceases to live.” – Lewis Mumford

Enjoying oneself seems so simple.  Just enjoy yourself.  But even that has become a little crazy and unconventional.  Letting go of what “needs” to be done and taking a chance in enjoying yourself.  What if for one moment you aren’t thinking about what needs to be done in the moment ahead or feeling guilty about not doing enough in the moment that passed?

Live off the wall a little.  Do something crazy and unconventional.  Have ice cream for dinner.  Sleep in.  Wake up and see a sunrise.  Surprise the kids with a spontaneous trip in the middle of the night.  Follow your heart.  Dance in the driveway.

Don’t be a wallflower.  Don’t wait to be asked to dance.

Groove and let the madness of the music get to you.
